DAVIES: This is FRESH AIR, and our guest is Adam Goldman. You know, we had - we talked to many, many people who worked there, and, you know, they described Seddon as wanting to do more long-term operations - right? GOLDMAN: Erik Prince is the well-known founder of Blackwater, the security contractors who were involved in the massacre in Iraq. And then he stays on working for a Project Veritas till roughly June of '18. And that one was made public. You know, you say in one of these stories, this operation's use of spy craft to manipulate the politics of several states over the years greatly exceeds the tactics of traditional political tricks operations. Mr. Seddon owns a cabin that he keeps stocked with guns, food and other supplies as preparation for a cataclysmic event in the United States. Prince noted he owned a home in Wyoming and had been connected to the state since 1992. There was eventually litigation about that, wasn't there? And he comes from a wealthy, conservative family in Michigan, right? He passed away recently. There was a meeting at lunch which led to a resignation, I believe, of GOLDMAN: They targeted our editor, Dean Baquet. He's proposed similar things in other countries, hasn't he? officer who went on to win an important House seat in Virginia as a Democrat. The teachers union is asking for more than $3 million in damages, accusing the group of being a vigilante organization which claims to be dedicated to exposing corruption. A former British spy and Republican mega-donor Erik Prince, a founder of the private military contractor Blackwater (now rebranded as "Academi) and brother to former U.S. Education Secretary. In a Jan. 15 order, U.S. District Court Judge Alan Johnson of Cheyenne tossed out Prince's defamation lawsuit against The Intercept. Their names are Beau Maier and Sofia LaRocca, and they're in Las Vegas for a Democratic primary debate. New details reveal the ambitions of an operation intended to infiltrate opponents of Donald Trump, including moderate Republicans as well as progressives and Democrats. You know, Princes are pretty savvy. One of the documents indicates that Marti Halverson, a former Wyoming state lawmaker, provided a list of people for the operatives to target. To win his case, Prince will ultimately have to show the story was false and he may also have to prove the publication knew the story was false or showed a reckless disregard as to whether it was accurate. AFT Michigan sued Project Veritas in federal court, alleging trespassing, eavesdropping and other offenses. Those contentions have become a key point of early proceedings in the case. The parties are currently awaiting a ruling from Judge Johnson, who could choose to allow the case to proceed in Wyoming; permit some more limited fact-gathering about the appropriate jurisdiction; transfer the case to New York; or throw it out entirely. Previously, he covered national security for The Washington Post and worked on the investigative team at the Associated Press, where he and his colleagues revealed the New York Police Department's Muslim spying programs. DAVIES: Did any of these result in resignations, firings, criminal investigations GOLDMAN: You know, and in the end, the people who were involved, I think, were, you know, slightly humiliated. Mr. Seddons role in the teachers union operation detailed in internal Project Veritas emails that have emerged from the discovery process of a court battle between the group and the union has not previously been reported, nor has Mr. Princes role in recruiting Mr. Seddon for the groups activities. He is not registered in Park County or [Wyoming] presently, unless he is not going by Erik Dean Prince and has changed his name, Park County Elections Deputy Pat Cole said in a Sept. 17 email; he said Prince hadnt voted in Wyoming since 2000. McMaster. So he's certainly moved in this world before. DAVIES: That's a really fascinating example of the power of, you know, database reporting now because you knew they were doing the thing in Georgetown, but their campaign contributions in Wyoming have to be publicly reported. And they were deeply critical of Trump. The ex-undercover British spy, Richard Seddon, trained conservative operatives first at the Prince family ranch in Wyoming, then at a large, $10,000-a-month house near Georgetown University. They were critical of Donald Trump and his agenda. I think Trump pardoned at least one. These two are conservatives, right? GOLDMAN: Well, as we started reporting on Erik Prince and Richard Seddon, I became deeply interested in learning who, in fact, was working for this organization. And they will get, you know, negative information from public records. And then I talked to somebody else. Prince said he should have named a different company Moyock Medical Supplies LLC as an example of an entity he owns thats registered to his address in Wapiti. Erik Prince, the failson face of privatized war If the face long associated with modern mercenaries were more successful at his business, we might already live in a much more dystopian world. He was asked whether he had provided any of the groups secret recordings of Democracy Partners to the Republican National Committee or any member of the Trump family. Richard Seddon, in 2018, I guess, decided to stop working with Project Veritas. They went after a Democratic staffer in Washington. Last year, the group received a $1 million contribution made through the law firm Alston & Bird, a financial document obtained by The New York Times showed. In more recent years, Prince has remained a mover and shaker and a controversial figure on the international stage. But her picture was on this website. Amid his globe-trotting, however, Prince says he does most of his work from Wyoming and calls Park County home. They - you know, there's a wide range of targets, and many of them have been exposed. The group has also become intertwined with the political activities of Mr. Trump and his family. - not one expose every year. And we actually - I, you know, I - Mark and I reached out to our - one of great political reporters, Jonathan Martin, and asked him, you know. Mr. Princes role in the effort, which has not been previously disclosed, sheds further light on how a group of ultraconservative Republicans employed spycraft to try to manipulate the American political landscape. But "one of the most brazen operations of the campaign" was an attempt to take down H.R. I mean, we know that Erik Prince was trying to sell a plan to the Trump administration to put these - for him, in fact, to put a private, you know, army of a bunch of mercenaries in Afghanistan and sort of take over those responsibilities from the government, sort of, in some ways, replace the U.S. forces on the ground there. What was going on there? WASHINGTON Erik Prince, the security contractor with close ties to the Trump administration, has in recent years helped recruit former American and British spies for secretive. If Judge Johnson concludes he lacks jurisdiction to hear the case in Wyoming, Princes attorneys say the suit should be transferred to the Southern District of New York, where The Intercept is based. I have a Wyoming drivers license, I am a Wyoming resident, and exploration is underway, Prince said of his potential Senate bid. Mr. Prince had hired a former MI6 officer to help train the Project Veritas operatives, The Intercept wrote, but it did not identify the officer. What kind of inroads did they make? They were, in fact, undercover spies who had been building a cover as eager Democrats when, in fact, they were anything but that. DAVIES: Right. We're speaking with New York Times reporter Adam Goldman, one of a team of Times reporters who've been writing about an effort by conservatives to train operatives in undercover operations to infiltrate progressive groups, unions and the offices and campaigns of Democratic and moderate Republican candidates and elected officials. So I thought to myself, why are they giving money to these people, these Democratic politicians? And so, you know, I can't tell you right now it hasn't, that somebody else isn't doing this. And they received what was essentially clandestine training at a ranch in Wyoming that's owned by the family of Erik Prince. Mr. Seddon wrote that Ms. Jorge copied a great many documents from the file room, and Mr. OKeefe bragged that the group would be able to get a ton more access agents inside the educational establishment.. In a book published in 2018, Mr. OKeefe wrote that Mr. Trump years earlier had encouraged him to infiltrate Columbia University and obtain Mr. Obamas records. Where we're not - what we hadn't really seen was an actual British spy, somebody trained in clandestine activities, launching a secret operation using undercovers with false - basically false cover stories to infiltrate political circles, gather information and collect it for whatever purpose, I guess, because ultimately, as our story says, this appeared to be a paper play. You know, a big question about the stories that you've described is, is this activity illegal, what the couple did in Wyoming, you know, presenting themselves as - dishonestly as active Democrats in order to get information? This couple, Beau and Sofia - they spent real time and effort trying to ingratiate themselves with Democrats and progressives. James OKeefe, the head of Project Veritas, declined to answer detailed questions about Mr. And I think the Intercept geolocated that photo and determined it was Erik Prince's ranch. If he enters the race, he would be challenging Republican incumbent John Barrasso in the 2018 primaries, with the encouragement of Steve Bannon. His willingness to support Mr. Seddons operation is fresh evidence of his engagement in political espionage projects at home during a period when he was an informal adviser to Trump administration officials. And, you know, Seddon was out at the farm. And there was, you know, another individual from the Emirates who was there. We'll continue our conversation in just a moment. He was the one who replaced Michael Flynn after he was fired. DAVIES: So how did you come upon this couple, Beau and Sofia? You know, again, as when Barbara Ledeen, the staffer for the Senate Judiciary Committee, which was run by Chuck Grassley, you know, was trying to find Hillary Clinton's missing emails, and Prince gets involved in that, too. So O'Keefe's Instagram photo, you know, led people to realize that, you know, Prince had played a role, at least in letting Project Veritas use the ranch for training. He's a former British intelligence officer who served in Washington, D.C., and in Pakistan and eventually leaves the British Secret Intelligence Service and develops some relationship with Erik. Once a small operation running on a shoestring budget, Project Veritas in recent years has had a surge in donations from both private donors and conservative foundations. - trying to find, you know, damaging information on, you know, on political rivals, you know, using, you know, private investigative firms. At the time, Prince was exploring the possibility of mounting a Republican primary challenge to incumbent U.S. Sen. The job put her in a position to gain valuable information about which Republican candidates the group was supporting with independent advertising. Sofia is from Maryland. What does that tell us about Erik Prince? Ms. Gore ended up rejecting the proposal because it was too expensive people with knowledge of the plan said it would start in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Mr. Seddon regularly updated Mr. OKeefe about the operation against the Michigan teachers union, according to internal Project Veritas emails, where the language of the groups leaders is marbled with spy jargon. And we've written about that. GOLDMAN: Yeah. But, you know, O'Keefe brags on the Instagram photo that they're going to be the world's best intelligence agency - I believe that's what it says - not the world's best journalists. And this was not - you know, James O'Keefe has said Project Veritas was unaware of this, and they adamantly deny knowing anything about this. DAVIES: Right. I mean, he - it seems that - it's our understanding that Prince introduced Seddon to Project Veritas. There's an annual one, Nellie T. Ross Banquet, and I believe it's in Cheyenne every February. Prince said he regularly host[s] customers, investors, employees and other business associates at my Wyoming ranch.. And, of course, that was an entree into a larger circle of prominent Democrats. Project Veritas has said its activities are legal and protected by the First Amendment, and the case is scheduled to go to trial in the fall. #Veritas pic.twitter.com/4IFvjKurGK, In the pending defamation case, Princes attorneys have cited that reporting as evidence The Intercept knew Prince did his business from Wyoming, going as far as to allege the articles unstated focus was on Princes reputation and livelihood in Wyoming., The Intercept attorneys, however, pointed to past statements from Prince and records indicating he lives in Virginia. At the center of the scheme was an unusual cast: a former British spy connected to the security contractor Erik Prince, a wealthy heiress to the Gore-Tex fortune and undercover operatives like. And I realized they were giving money to Democrats in Wyoming, Arizona and Colorado. Drawing on information from three unnamed sources, The Intercept reported Prince met with a top official from Russias Wagner Group at an undisclosed location earlier this year and offered his mercenary forces to support the firms operations in Libya and Mozambique.. Emails sent to Mr. Seddon went unanswered. And so these people were brought on to help manage these many, many, many, many operations. In fact, I wrote a memo about what I had found. According to Prince, the tech adviser determined that the emails were not authentic.. [CDATA[ He's, you know, the private military contractor. O'Keefe writes about it in his book. Prince to help him secure funding is just one of the new details about Mr. Seddons operation revealed in documents obtained by The Times and interviews with people familiar with his plans. Using a different alias the next year, the same undercover operative infiltrated the congressional campaign of Abigail Spanberger, then a former C.I.A. What was this about? Separately, Ms. Gore unsuccessfully tried to raise money for the project from Foster Friess, a billionaire Wyoming businessman, during a January 2019 meeting, three people said. They used a code name LibertyU for their operative inside the organization, Marisa Jorge, who graduated from Liberty University in Virginia, one of the nations largest Christian colleges.
